Sunday Trading Ban Reminder
Trading Sundays are rare in Poland as there are only seven in 2023. Since 2018, the Sunday and holiday trading ban has limited retail at the weekend. From 2020, the ban covered most Sundays, but this year sees two trading Sundays falling in April.
Calendar Reminder
In 2023, shops will be open on the following Sundays:
29 January
2 April
30 April
25 June
27 August
17 December
24 December – only until 2 pm.
If 24 December falls on a Sunday, the same rules apply as for 24 December, when it does not fall on a Sunday. “This means that trade on such a day after 2 pm is prohibited, except, of course, for the exceptions specified in the law, which the trade ban does not apply to anyway,” explains Penteris Associate Marta Mizerska.
Regulations Reminder
The law restricting trade on Sundays was introduced in 2018 with the Sunday trading ban gaining momentum over the past few years. The law is now in full force and shopping on Sundays is now the exception.
It should be noted, however, that the Sunday trading ban does not apply to pharmacies, gas stations, restaurants, amongst others, which are usually open on all Sundays. In the case of grocery stores, it is possible to do shopping on Sundays only if customers are served by the owner of the establishment who may be assisted free of charge by his or her spouse, children, parents, siblings, grandchildren or grandparents.
The penalty for violating the Sunday trading ban is anywhere from PLN 1,000 to PLN 100,000.
